Busted pipes breaking home and business owners bank accounts

Posted: Updated:
Four straight days of freezing temperatures have been leading to some big problems for many homes and businesses now dealing with the aftermaths of busted pipes.

A costly fix that has owners looking upwards into the thousands of dollars to repair.

It's messes like these that the cold weather is leaving behind, frigid temperatures have the I-81 rest stop in Ironto out of commission for the night, after a pipe burst in the ceiling.

The cold also struck pipes here at the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

Kim Gembala, director of administration says it’s taking dozens of people to clean up the mess.

"We had people at their desk when the ceiling came crashing through. the water was enormous. the mess was enormous."

A mess that they're still working to clean up.

An ice covered parking lot is the aftermath of flooding at Tanglewood Mall after frozen pipes burst in the stores.

Even Lane Stadium in Blacksburg was no exception to the cold after a late night eruption from frozen sprinkler systems.

For many, its hit home. Dozens of viewers have sent in pictures of the damage left behind. Larissa Reynolds in Christiansburg says after pipes burst in their finished basement, it’s going to cost almost $10,000 to get it back to normal.

Friendship Retirement Community in Roanoke had to be evacuated after a sprinkler system burst forced 32 residents out of their home for the night.

It happened right outside of Ted Macdonald's door.

"We come out and the mat was all soaked and it was coming under the door so evidently it was coming upstairs," Macdonald said.

The break happened here on the third floor and soaked through the bottom two floors.

"A lot of ceiling tiles broken laying in the hallways. Gallons, it's hard to say but a lot of water saturated quite a bit," Director of Campus Admission Kenneth Mowbray said.

Mowbray says everyone was evacuated safely. Crews worked through the night to ensure residents could come back the next day.

"We are all in the same boat to speak so we are glad to be back," Macdonald said.

A despite a few cords residents say they're happy to be back home.
