FRANKLIN COUNTY - While work on a new waterline along Route 122 may be causing some delays for drivers, it is a sign of progress for the future of Franklin County and its economic future.

"This is one building block in the big picture of getting utilities throughout the county." said Franklin County Director of Public Works, Don Smith.

The 3 million dollar project is partnership between Franklin County and Western Virginia Water Authority.   Franklin County budgeted for eight hundred thousand dollars and will borrow one million more.  Western Virginia Water Authority is providing one million dollars worth of materials for the project.  A two hundred fifty thousand dollar grant is paying for the design and engineering costs for the project.

Steve Martin's Company out of Martinsville is carefully putting together a the water line along Route 122.

Less than five miles away businesses like Haywood's Jewelry at Westlake Town Center may benefit from the growth it has the potential to create.

Joanna Hudzik owns Haywood's.  She explains, "We were one of the first people to sign a lease in the Westlake Town Center and there was really nothing across the street."

VitaZen moved into the new buildings that were built across street after outgrowing its space near Haywood's.

Brett Keister owns the vitamin and supplement store and believes the waterline will benefit everyone.

He says, "As the lake grows more things are here for people to stay at the lake and not have to go to Lynchburg or Roanoke to get whatever they are looking for."

That waterline is going to connect Westlake with Burnt Chimney.  That connection will allow Homestead Creamery to move forward with its million dollar expansion project.  That expansion will create twenty new jobs and allow the company to expand the products it offers.  It would like to begin making yogurt and cheese in addition to the milk, ice cream and butter it already sells.

Don Smith, Franklin County Director of Public Works, Don Smith says, "This is a critical building block to interconnecting waterlines in the county to help the infrastructure for the whole county to benefit the citizens here."

Work is ahead of schedule.  The goal is to have the line finished by fall if not sooner.
