NC high-tech driver's license project moving ahead

RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles has shifted work to create high-tech driver's licenses from a company with which it had repeated problems to a sister firm which it has done business with for years.

The DMV announced Thursday the Department of Transportation has signed a $73.5 million deal with MorphoTrust by which it will produce more than 2 million driver license and ID cards annually. The "next generation" licenses will meet federal standards. A pilot project is expected by the end of 2014.

MorphoTrust already provides North Carolina's current driver's licenses but couldn't do the upgraded licenses until recently.

Instead, DMV in 2010 hired a different company called MorphoTrak, but the contract was beset by delays and work stoppages.

MorphoTrak's parent bought what is now called MorphoTrust in 2011.
