DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham school board will meet in closed session Tuesday to discuss the search for a new schools superintendent.

Durham Public Schools Superintendent Eric Becoats resigned from his post Dec. 19 amid controversy about how he used his district-issued credit card.

The DPS school board has scheduled the first meeting to discuss the search for a new superintendent on Jan. 14. The discussion will be held in a closed session.

Becoats had submitted his resignation -- which took effect Dec. 31, 2013 -- after records revealed in October that he spent more than $20,000 with his district-issued credit card on out of state conferences, air travel, dinners, lunches and more.

He also came under fire for inappropriate use of an activity bus.

His resignation statement shows the school board agreed to pay him a one-time severance payment of $298,072.54.

Hugh Osteen, the deputy superintendent of operations, is serving as acting superintendent of DPS while the board prepares its search.
