Hot Springs nursing center evacuates 57 residents

Posted: Updated:
57 elderly residents were evacuated from Kissito Healthcare Hot Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Wednesday after a frozen sprinkler pipe burst in the attic.

Police say the building was flooded with ankle deep water from the burst. Parts of the ceiling fell down from the water.

Area contractors were called onsite to assess the damage and begin repairs.

“It was a very smooth evacuation”, said Darren Martin, facility spokesperson for The Springs.

The residents were moved into the dining area where they were accounted for and informed of the situation. All 57 residents were evacuated safely to Bath County High School.

By 8:30pm that night Martin says all the residents were safe and warm, either settled in or on their way to area nursing homes and hospital rooms.

“It was an incredible response by our emergency responders, volunteers, school staff and administration, hospital partners, area nursing homes, families of residents, and our staff here at The Springs.”

“It was so encouraging to see the outpouring of help and support from the community, we are just so thankful we are part of such warm caring compassionate community. Without their help there is no way this evacuation could have happened so quickly and so smoothly.”

The Springs expects the repairs to the facility will go very quickly and will re-open its doors to its residents early next week.
