Wake DA Willoughby will not run for re-election

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Colin Willoughby will not run for re-election as the district attorney in Wake County, he said Thursday, ending a run in office that began when he was appointed by Gov. Jim Hunt in 1983.

Willoughby first won election in 1986 and continued in office with a careful, deliberate style that included a cordial relationship with the media outlets that cover the courts system.

He said he was not sure if he would remain in the judicial system in some capacity.

"I'm not sure," he said. "I'm looking at other options right now."

He will serve out a term that ends in December.

Willoughby graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1973 and got his law degree from Campbell in 1979.
