Police investigate fatal crash that killed Ridgeway woman

Posted: Updated:

On Friday, Virginia state police continued to investigate a fatal crash. The accident happened along route 220 south on Thursday. Two people died in the crash.

Police said the male driver of a Ford pickup truck was being chased by Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies but the pursuit stopped once the driver crossed into Virginia. The driver of the pickup truck continued to drive the wrong way on 220 South when he hit a Dodge Caliber head-on. Darren Lockridge was one of the first to respond to the scene.

"There was a fairly large fireball we are talking flames 15 to 20 feet in the air" said Lockridge, President of the Ridgeway rescue Squad.

Rescue crews said the have had several accidents at nearby intersections such as Church Street and US 220. However, they said it was unusual for an accident to occurred along that particular stretch of road.

"We've had a lot of accidents in the Morehead Road and Greensboro Road (220) intersection" said Lockridge. "We've had several more in the Church Street and Greensboro Road intersection but we very rarely have them in between that stretch."

Lockridge has worked as a emergency responder for nearly 28 years. He and other volunteers said Thursday's wreck was one of the worst they've seen. There was debris scattered and both drivers had to be cut from their vehicles. Crews said they tried to help the female driver but it was too late.

"We checked on the victim in the car and called for a helicopter and realized there was nothing we could do for her" said Lockridge.

The female victim was identified as 28 year old Jennifer Courtney Thomasson. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the man driving the pickup truck has not been released.
