Salem cannon damaged by hit and run driver

Posted: Updated:
Police are searching for the person responsible for damaging Salem’s iconic World War I cannon that has resided there for ninety years.

The cannon is located at the intersection of Roanoke Boulevard and College Avenue and was hit by a hit and run driver late Sunday night or in the early morning hours on Monday.

The suspect driving the vehicle was headed south bound on College Avenue and attempted to make a left hand turn onto the Boulevard when the vehicle struck the cannon.

Police say the debris left at the scene indicates that the vehicle is a 1997 or 1998 Dodge Dakota or Dodge Durango pickup truck. The color of the truck is unknown, but based on the damage done to the cannon, the vehicle should have substantial damage to the passenger side front end.
