VMI policy change keeps Lee-Jackson Day parade off campus

Posted: Updated:
LEXINGTON, VA -

Changes are coming to this weekend's Lee-Jackson Day Parade in Lexington following a change in weapons policy at Virginia Military Institute.

For the last 13 years, the Sons of Confederate Veterans have put on the parade and ended it on VMI grounds. This year however, that won't happen.

VMI says since the last parade, it changed its policy and the period weapons carried by re-enactors in the parade are no longer allowed on campus. Spokesman Stewart MacInnis says there are operational military weapons on campus but outside weapons are prohibited, with some exceptions like police.

The change was made in an effort to increase campus safety, he said.

Sons of Confederate Veterans #1296 Lee-Jackson parade through downtown Lexington begins at 11:15 a.m. Saturday.
