Rocky Mount woman charged with malicious wounding for harming 9-year-old child

Posted: Updated:
A Rocky Mount woman is charged with malicious wounding after harming her 9-year-old child.

Rocky Mount investigator Jason Divers says it's never easy when a child abuse case lands on his desk.

He says the whole department stops what they are doing to figure out a way to make sure the child is safe.

"I've been in law enforcement since 1997 and every single time it's difficult to hear," Rocky Mount Police Department Investigator Jason Divers

A school leader noticed the elementary student had a severely injured lip and after an evaluation by the Department of Social Services, they found scars covering the child's body from a severe beating with a belt.

The child's mother, 33-year-old Shatori Jones, was arrested for a felony charge of malicious wounding on Friday.

"We are not saying you should never spank your child, no law enforcement officer or anybody will every say that," Divers says. "This is when it goes from a whipping to a beating."

Kids spend a lot of their time in school, which is why Divers says the partnership between the school, police, and social services is critical.

He says we should all be aware of the signs that a child might be suffering in silence from abuse.

The Southern VA Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Joyce Moran says some signs are significant changes in behavior, chronic anxiety, stomach pain, headache or visible physical injuries that don't look accidental

Divers says the increase in school resource officers also plays a big role in making sure these signs are noticed.

The child in this has been removed from the home and is safe with other family members.
