Penguin Parade for Giles Co. Teacher

Posted: Updated:
GILES COUNTY, VA - A Giles County Elementary school is showing their support for a sixth grader math teacher, Jessica Jewell, who has been absent from work after her young son was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Students at Eastern Elementary School in Pembroke have put on a special penguin parade for her, her baby Cooper and the entire family.

Every student at the school has decorated a handmade penguin, complete with special "Get Well" messages. The penguins line almost every wall throughout the school. All 476 penguins will be presented to Jessica, when she and Cooper return this weekend to prepare for chemotherapy treatments.

Melinda Ogle has worked as a substitute teacher at the school for 13 years, most recently filling in for Jessica-- she helped organize the entire event.

"We are thinking about her daily," says Ogle. "We just want her to know, her and her family. We love her and we can't wait for her to get back."

The Jewell Family has spent 83 days in the hospital while Cooper has been receiving treatment.
