Va school boards back challenge to takeover law

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - School boards across Virginia are voicing opposition to a new law that allows the state to take over chronically failing schools.

The Virginia School Boards Association says 100 of the state's 133 school boards have approved resolutions supporting a lawsuit that challenges the law.

The association and the Norfolk School Board filed the lawsuit in August 2013. They argue that the law usurps authority granted to local school boards by the Virginia Constitution.

Proponents of the 2013 law say a handful of schools have been allowed to fail for too long, shortchanging students who are entitled to a quality education.

The school boards association says the Alexandria City County, Madison County Board of Supervisors and the NAACP's Virginia chapter also have approved resolutions supporting the lawsuit.
