Roanoke County School Board heads to Richmond today

Posted: Updated:

The Roanoke County School Board will head to Richmond today to meet with our local Representatives and Senators.

The board will ask those legislators to fight for more money in the budget for schools this year.

Roanoke County Schools get $14.5 million less in state funding than five years ago.

The board has not filled many open positions to save money.

It's also tried to cut things that wouldn't greatly change the classroom.

Board Member, Jerry Canada, says further cuts from the state could impact students.

If the board faces more cuts, he says, "You have to look at things you wouldn't have even thought out prior to 2008."

He says the board will consider cutting back on technology and outsourcing transportation if funding is reduced again.

However, if the school system receives more money, the board plans to give school employees a 5% raise over the next three years.

Teachers have only received one raise in five years.

The extra money would also help maintain the current student to teacher ratio, which Canada says is important to the board.

Finally, new technology is something the board will consider buying.

The board will decide what it will spend money on and what will be cut in March.
