Timothy Wellons to serve 15 1/2 for deadly Roanoke crash

ROANOKE - Timothy Wellons, the man charged with driving drunk and causing a deadly crash on interstate I-581 in Roanoke last June, has been sentenced to 42 to and a half years in prison.

Wellons will serve 15 and a half years with 27 years being suspended.

Wellons plead no contest to a number of charges back in September for causing the fiery crash that killed two truck drivers.

Wellons' blood alcohol level on June 12th, 2013 was four times the legal limit.

In court, we learned about the two victim's families and the children and grandchildren they left behind.

The Commonwealth's Attorney said those men are gone because Timothy Wellons "made the selfish decision" to drink and drive.

We also learned about Wellons long struggle with alcoholism. It's an addiction he told the judge he's tried desperately to stop.

Wellons has two previous DUI's on his record before the deadly crash.

He received treatment, but the attorney said he left before the center said he was ready.

As a result, Paul Golding from Salem and Kenneth Graham from Lexigton will now never return to their families.

Wellons made a tearful apology to the family. He took the stand and turned to the family.

"I wish I had the words to express how sorry I am to you guys and my own family," Timothy Wellons says. "If I could take it away I would."

"I miss him. I can't pick up the phone and call him like I used to to say I love you," victim's wife, Glenda Graham says.

A judge sentenced Timothy Wellons to 42.5 years in prison. He will serve 15.5 years.
