Child safety experts push for safer car seats

ROANOKE, VA -

A proposed change to help make car seats safer could give you more peace of mind when you get on the road with your little ones.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposal is being considered right now that would require child seats made in the future to be safer during side-impact crashes. They would go through a test simulating a or T-bone crash. Tests are already done for frontal crashes and local safety advocates tell me adding side impact tests is not only doable for manufacturers but will make a difference for kids.

"There are some manufacturers right now that already voluntarily make their car seats a little bit stronger to withstand those side impact so you can look for those. A lot of times they'll have a label or you can call the manufacturer to see if they do the side impact testing already," said Safe Kids Southwest Virginia coordinator Jill Lucas Drakeford.

The proposal will give car seat makers three years to make any new changes to meet the requirement.
