Roanoke County receives grant to help market to large corporations

Posted: Updated:

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors will discuss a $10,000 grant that Appalachian Power is giving to the county at tonight's meeting.

The grant will be used to help the county attract new data centers which are basically warehouses filled with computers that store information.

The money will pay for advertisements in trade magazines and at data center conferences.

The ads will feature the available lots at the Roanoke County Center for Research and Technology, which is an industrial park near Dixie Caverns.

The goal is to reach large corporations that are looking to build new data centers with the advertisements.

Attracting data centers has become a big goal for the county as those corporations would be paying millions of dollars in taxes.

According to Roanoke County Economic Development Director, Jill Loope, there has been a boom in the number of data centers in Northern Virginia.

The hope is that some of those companies will expand into the Southwest portion of the state.

The county has invested $12 million to prepare it's industrial park for these facilities.

Currently, the park has five available lots that meet the infrastructure needs of a large data center.

Loope says that companies like Microsoft have recently looked at the property.
