Snow and ice leaves roadways dangerous for morning commutes

Posted: Updated:
The roads may have been clear when you went into work this morning, but leaving work is a different story.

Snow covered roads in Franklin County and throughout our area made driving dangerous for people as they went home.

"Even though it’s just snow, it can still be pretty slick," Brandy Torrence of Rocky Mount said.

Road crews headed out braving icy roadways but the snow hit so fast it was hard for them to keep up, leaving snow and ice on main roadways and many back roads uncleared.

VDOT has listed all roadways in Franklin County, Grayson County and Floyd County as moderately covered with snow and ice.

Crews work to keep the main roadways clear but with temperatures in the single digits all night. secondary roads are expected to be very slick in the morning if they are left untreated.

Many county schools are already closed for tomorrow.

So in preparation sleds were a very hot ticket item for sale at the Rocky Mount local hardware store.
