Man Charged with Abducting Child

Posted: Updated:
(Christiansburg, VA) - A man is in custody, charged with abducting his child after an altercation earlier this evening with the child’s mother.

James B. Necessary, formerly of Tazewell but now residing in Ohio, is charged with the following:

-2 counts of Abduction (felony)     - 18.2-47

-2 counts of Hit & Run (felony)      - 46.2-894

-2 counts of Domestic Assault       - 18.2-57.2

-1 count of preventing a 911 call   - 18.2-164

According to the child’s mother, she and Necessary are separated but he unexpectedly returned to the area today, asking to see the child.  The paid allegedly agreed to meet at the Red Robin in Christiansburg so Necessary could visit with the child, a 19-month-old girl.

While in the restaurant, the parents began arguing and continued their argument into Necessary’s vehicle in the parking lot.

Just before 6:30 p.m., Necessary allegedly attempted to drive away with both the woman and child in his vehicle.

A struggle ensued and the woman either jumped or was pushed from the vehicle as Necessary continued to travel forward.

The woman was struck by Necessary’s vehicle as it continued forward, running over a tree as he fled the parking lot.  The woman sustained minor injuries.

Christiansburg police and communication officers immediately notified all surrounding jurisdictions of suspect and vehicle information and initiated the Amber Alert process.

Before the Amber Alert could be fully processed, Necessary’s vehicle was located parked at a business just off Interstate 81 in Pulaski County.

After a brief confrontation with Virginia State Police and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, Necessary was taken into custody without further incident.

The child was not injured.

Additional charges are pending in Pulaski County stemming from Necessary’s confrontation with law enforcement.
