Smarter Living: School Choice

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Choosing the right school for your child can be a daunting and overwhelming task. Not everyone is happy with their assigned school, but fortunately you may have an option.

It's important to know that there are deadlines to apply, though.

In this edition of "Smarter Living," Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week breaks down what every parent needs to know when it comes to choosing a school.

"What they should do first is make a list of attributes of what they want to see in their ideal school for their child whether it's performance in a key subject area, graduation rates or class sizes and then start visiting schools," Campanella says. "When you get to the school ask the principal and teachers lots of questions and get answers. You are the consumer, you are the parent."

Campanella says it's important to start looking as soon as possible.

"Start looking right now, don't wait until the spring or summer," he says. "North Carolina has more educational options for families than ever before."

When it comes to options for families in North Carolina, there are many options ranging from public schools to private schools. There's also the freedom to home school as well.

Deadlines are quickly approaching in Wake County. To apply for a magnet school or an application school, you have until Feb. 9.

To apply for a magnet school in the Durham Public Schools system, the deadline is Jan. 31.
