Blue Ridge Veterans Celebration gives $7,300 to local groups

VINTON, VA -

The 2nd annual Blue Ridge Veterans Celebration events raised thousands of dollars for local organizations that support veterans and their families and provided about 200 meals.

The Roanoke Valley joined together to honor and recognize the men and women putting their lives on the line during the annual, regional effort to say "Thank You" to our veterans, active duty military and their families while giving back to local organizations.  Veterans, families and the community attended multiple events across the area—including a 5K run/walk in Roanoke and Veterans ceremony and picnic at the Vinton War Memorial.

2014 grants total more than $7,000:

  • $2,000 Military Family Support Center
  • $2,000 Virginia Wounded Warrior Program
  • $1,000 Total Action for Progress/Homeless Veterans Program. "TAP will use the funds to address transportation needs such as gas vouchers and bus passes to assist veterans in getting to and from work, medical appointments and other needed services" said Lin Roberts, the Education and Employment Coordinator.
  • $1,000 Prevention Council of Roanoke County for starting a new VetCorps program. "VetCorps is a service work program which seeks to build community supports around military families and veterans. The goal of the project is to establish a network of resources, service providers, employment and skill building opportunities" said Nancy Hans, the director.
  • $1,000 Vietnam Commemoration Committee of the Roanoke Valley Veterans Council (RVVC). The committee was organized to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. "The grant will be used to offset the cost of local events to mark the commemoration" said COL (R) John Miller, who chairs the RVVC. "As a commemorative partner we will host special events in recognition of the sacrifice of our regional Vietnam Veterans. There are 1306 Virginia names on the Vietnam Wall, 100 are from the Roanoke/New River Valley. Many of these KIA do not have pictures and our efforts will support finding pictures from those 826 Virginians."
  • $300 Stonewall Jackson Chapter of the Association of the United States Army. The money will be used to host bingo events at the VA Medical Center and Virginia Veterans Care Center. "The Veteran residents at each of the two centers would have a respite from the normal routine, a diversion from the everyday, and have an opportunity to succeed gaining tangible evidence of success" said COL (R) John Miller, President of the Stonewall Jackson Chapter.

Since 2012, the Blue Ridge Veterans Celebration has raised more than $20,000 for our local veteran community.
