Roanoke County leaders hope to make dangerous roads safer

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke County leaders continue to examine ways to make the roads safer for drivers and pedestrians. Officials said Plantation Road between I-81 and Williamson Road needs to be improved.

Getting back and forth to work can be dangerous for drivers and pedestrians along Plantation Road.

"I'm scared to walk down the strip being that there is not a sidewalk there" said Christian Lee, works near Plantation Road in Roanoke County.

County leaders said that the area between I-81 and Williamson Road along Plantation Road is unique because of the high number of people who work nearby including hundreds of employees from ITT Exelis and Wells Fargo. The mix of drivers and pedestrians has caused traffic problems.

" Several businesses are located in the area along Plantation Road" said Megan Cronise, Roanoke County Community Development. "We have had some safety concerns there with quite a bit of crashes."

Crash statistics, compiled using Roanoke County Police Department and VDOT accident data from 2010-2013, show that there were 40 accidents between Williamson Road and I-81 on Plantation Road.

Local leaders want to improve traffic and prevent others from getting hurt. Some of the proposed changes include sidewalks, lights and paths similar to the Roanoke River Greenway.

Roanoke County officials will host an open house to review the plans. The event takes place Thursday, January 30th, from 4pm-8pm at the Country Inn & suites, 7860 Plantation Road.
