Va.'s electronic WIC cards go statewide in March

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia is preparing a statewide rollout of an electronic benefits transfer system for a supplemental nutrition program.

The EBT card system will replace paper vouchers used by clients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, also known as WIC.

The Virginia Department of Health launched the EBT system as a pilot project in November in Hopewell, Prince George, Surry, Sussex, Greensville, Emporia, Dinwiddie and Petersburg. It will be rolled out statewide beginning in March.

The department says the EBT card is similar to a debit card.

The department also has implemented a new management information system, called Crossroads. The system certifies new participants in the WIC program, issues benefits and transfers benefits to EBT cards. It also tracks participants' nutritional needs.
