John Adams Elementary student is 1 of 12 finalists in national competition

Posted: Updated:
KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) - Ashley Roberts from John Adams Elementary School in Kingsport, TN is one of 12 finalists in a national environmental competition that could win her school a grand prize of $10,000.

Scotties, the tissue company in charge of the competition sent this in for publication:

Burlington, MA (January 14, 2014) -- Scotties, a leader in the tissue industry, is pleased to announce the top 12 finalists in its TREES ROCK! video contest including 5th grader Ashley Roberts from John Adams Elementary School in Kingsport, TN. The Grand Prize winner will receive $10,000 for their school to use towards a sustainable project, such as tree plantings, updated / recycled playground equipment and energy efficient lighting. Kids who entered the contest were required to create a 3 minute video on the importance of trees -- to themselves, to their school, and to their community.

As a big sister to triplets, Ashley is a busy young girl. Despite learning about this contest only a few days prior to the close of the entry period – Ashley and her dad Phil jumped into action to create a video. Her entry depicts a news broadcast anchor going live to her correspondents (all played by Ashley herself) about a burning question “why are trees important?”

The cheeky commentary and the tree jokes are plenty in this lively video. “I know I’m partial, but I think she’s a great little actress and made each of the lines come alive!” said Phil Roberts.

Students were encouraged to be as creative as possible in their entries – for example, by creating a poem, a play, a speech, a song, or a dance. After rigorous scrutiny by a panel of judges, entries from around the country were narrowed down to the 12 best in the categories of most compelling relative to theme, clarity of message, and creativity.

Winners will be chosen by voters across America who can watch the top videos and vote for their favorite from January 14th through February 14th on www.scottiestreesrock.com.
