Anthony Wilson to take over as next Blacksburg Police Chief

Posted: Updated:
Anthony Wilson has been selected Chief of Police, succeeding Chief Kim Crannis who will retire March 1.

Wilson, a Blacksburg native, Marine, and Virginia Tech graduate, is a 16 year veteran of the Blacksburg Police Department where he has advanced from Patrol Officer to Captain of the Services Division. Over the years, he has served as Blacksburg's Homeland Defense Coordinator, Tactical Commander during the William Morva manhunt and the Virginia Tech shootings, Emergency Response Team Commander and K-9 Unit Commander. He has also served as a volunteer firefighter and officer with the Blacksburg Fire Department.

Wilson is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation's Professional Executive Leadership School. He has received a Medal of Valor, the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation's Lifesaving Award, the Distinguished Service Award, Meritorious Service Award, and the American Legion Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer award.

"After a competitive search process, it became very clear to us that Anthony Wilson is the right individual to lead the Blacksburg Police Department," said Town Manager Marc Verniel.

"Anthony demonstrates strength, professionalism, compassion, experience, and an overall love of this community. These are the characteristics of a great Police Chief and we're looking forward to having him on board in his new leadership role."

Wilson will begin his duties as Chief of Police on March 1 with a salary of $96,000.
