Virginia Governor announces 150 jobs for rural area

Posted: Updated:

On Friday, Governor Terry McAuliffe was in Southwest Virginia for a major economic development announcement. The democrat was on hand as Kilgour Industries, a U.K. based company announced plans to build its first U.S. facility in Martinsville. The move is expected to create 155 jobs.

According to their website, Kilgour Industries is at the forefront of the aerospace industry. The president of the company, Raymond Kilgour, said they choose Henry County because of it's skilled workforce.

Virginia's new governor said he is focused on improving economic conditions across the commonwealth. In particularly, Terry McAuliffe hopes to make more job announcements in rural areas.

Over the past decade, Martinsville was hit hard by the closing of textile businesses and other industries. Economic development officials believe Kilgour's plans to move to the industrial park are another sign that the area is rebounding. WSLS 10 requested job numbers from the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development office. Figures show that since 2012 more than 500 jobs were announced which includes both new and expanding businesses. The governor hopes Friday's announcement is a step toward bringing more industries to the area.

"We are working to improve education and bring all the new technologies jobs like in aerospace, cyberspace, nano-technology" said McAuliffe. "All these areas are going to be the future of growth."

With an annual pay of more than $30,000 a year, many look forward to seeing Kilgour Industries' Virginia location up and running in by 2015.
