Posted: Updated:
(Franklin County, VA)  On Friday, January 31st at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Office of the Sheriff received a 911 call in reference to a shooting at a residence in the 100 block of Peak’s View Drive in the Moneta area of Franklin County.

When deputies arrived at the scene they were met by a female resident of the home and her toddler son. The female lived at the home with her boyfriend, Herbert Aragon Jr., age 37.

The woman advised deputies that she had given her child a bath and that when she exited the bathroom she observed the front door to the home was open. She told deputies that she had locked the door prior to giving her child a bath. Fearing that someone had entered the residence, the woman said she retrieved a handgun from the bedroom and began checking the house. While checking the residence, the female told deputies that she was startled by an unknown person. The woman discharged the firearm - striking the subject. The subject was identified as Aragon whom she said had returned home early and unannounced from a business trip. Aragon was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies secured the scene and obtained a search warrant. The female resident and her son were transported by ambulance to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital for evaluation. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.
