The following is a news release from Virginia State Police:

The Appomattox County, Va., Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the Virginia State Police and U.S. Marshals Service, is searching for a local man who they say killed his wife Friday night.

During the course of the investigation, law enforcement has been able to place the wanted subject in Georgia early Saturday morning. Investigators have reason to believe he may be headed for the Florida Keys or western Texas near Abilene.

The incident began at approximately 4:35 p.m. Friday, when the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office responded to a fatal shooting at a gas station on Court Street near the Town of Appomattox, Va. Laura Lee Evans, 45, was shot while in her vehicle. She was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, where she later died.

The Sheriff's Office says Evans' estranged husband, Aubrey Bascom "Butch" Evans III, 69, fled the shooting scene in a black 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. He is now wanted on one count of first-degree murder, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Evans is a white male, is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs approximately 230 pounds. He has blue eyes and graying black hair. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a knee brace.

The black Chevrolet Suburban has a yellow "Army" sticker displayed on it and a Virginia handicap license plate 347-132.

Evans is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to please call 911 to notify local law enforcement or call the Appomattox County, Va., Sheriff's Office at 434-352-8241.
