Schools grapple with snow days, possible make-up days

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Students are heading back to school today after a dealing with delays and closings all winter.

With the potential for icy weather this week and of course six more weeks of winter, some schools are making calendar changes to make up for days lost. In Montgomery county, the school system has six built in days that will change the last day of school depending on how many are used. Students in the county have missed five days as of today. There is still one built in day remaining but anything over six and the school might have to consider using scheduled closed days.

Roanoke County has three banked days. Students have missed five days and are already making up for it with previously scheduled days off. The county could end up making up days during spring break days and or possibly have Saturday school if they miss too many more. Roanoke County previously used Saturday school as a way to make up days.

The Roanoke City School system has missed four days but so far there's been no discussion about making those up. Spokesman Justin McLeod says the school system is in good shape and focuses more on hours rather than days. The Department of Education requires that students be in school for 180 days or 990 teaching hours, meaning school divisions can choose to extend the school day to make up hours.
