Pulaski infant's vigil, mother speaks out

Posted: Updated:
Prayers and tears filled a vigil for 5-month old Cory Cole in Pulaski County Monday night.

Family and friends lit candles near where police found the baby's body in the Draper area last Thursday.

Cory's mother Samantha Warden says it doesn't feel real that her son is gone.

"I can't wrap my head around it. I don't think anyone else can," Cory's mother Samantha Warden says.

Warden says she wants the focus to be on her son Cory and making sure he gets the justice he deserves.

"It means the world to me that my family and friends were able to come and that the community came to show their support for Cory and their love for Cory," Warden says.

Under advice from the police, she's stayed away from making any statements that would hurt the investigation. She knows many people have had questions about her involvement, but she says she would never intentionally put Cory in harms way. She says she called police when she thought her son was missing.

Warden says she's lost a child before to heart failure and the second loss has been crippling. She says harsh speculation from people in the community has caused a lot of pain for her family. She's asked people to focus on Cory and not being negative. She says she's even received some death threats.

"A lot of people have sent me horrible messages and Facebook messages saying I should go kill myself," Warden says.

Warden's fiance Howard Cole is in jail for felony child abuse related to their son Cory. So far, he hasn't been charged with the murder of his son. Warden says in the six years they've been engaged, she's never seen anything like this.

"No one expected this. Cole had a big heart and you could see the love that he had for Cory. I don't know where this came from," Warden says.

Cole's mother Hazel Gordon also said she's in disbelief.

There's still many questions surrounding what happened to this child, but for now, the community is coming together in their grief to honor and remember baby Cory.
