MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA - Police say the suspect in a chase stemming from an attempted robbery hit police cars before he was stopped.  Justin William Swanson, 29 years old, of Callands, VA, was driving a silver Honda Odyssey during his alleged flight from police on I-81. He struck two Virginia State Police cars, which sustained damage. The officers driving those cars were unhurt. Working with state police, Montgomery County sheriff's deputies were able to stop Swanson near mile marker 126 at around 8:30 a.m.

Police say the van was reported stolen in Roanoke City, and that  Swanson is wanted for Fraud in Danville. After this morning's events, Swanson  was arrested and has been charged with Attempted Robbery and is being held in the Montgomery County Jail with no bond. The investigation is on-going and more charges are possible pending the outcome of the investigation.

12:30 update

10:16 a.m.
Police have arrested the suspect of an attempted robbery this morning in Elliston.

It happened around 8 a.m. at the Food Mart on Roanoke Road.

Witness described the vehicle to investigators and Virginia State Police spotted it a short time later on Interstate 81.

The suspect was arrested around 8:30 a.m.

Police are expected to send out more information about the suspect and possible charges at a later time.

The incident caused a major back-up on I-81 southbound near mile marker 126.


Montgomery County Sheriff tells WSLS there was an attempted robbery in Elliston around 8 a.m. 

A search immediately began for the suspect, who police spotted a short time later on I 81.  Following a brief chase, the Sheriff says the suspect was stopped around mile marker 126 southbound. 

Police are still on the scene working to detain the suspect.
