GOP operative paid $140K for McAuliffe consulting

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Campaign finance records show that a longtime GOP operative who Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently appointed to the state's Alcoholic Beverage Control board was paid $140,000 for consulting on McAuliffe's campaign last year.

Boyd Marcus shocked Virginia's political class last year by endorsing McAuliffe. Last month, the governor appointed Marcus to a $130,000-a-year job as chairman of the state's ABC board.

Many Republican lawmakers are angry at the appointment and have suggested it was a political payoff, which the governor denies.

Marcus' consulting firm was paid $100,000 by a super PAC controlled by the Democratic Governors Association, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Marcus' firm was also paid $40,000 directly by the McAuliffe campaign. The combined payments make Marcus one of the highest-paid campaign aides.
