ROANOKE COUNTY -

Hollins University Theatre has received a lot of national attention winning several high profile awards over the last year. As a result of the success Hollins won the honor of hosting the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Students from all over the southeast are in town this week to compete, learn and watch productions.

The festival is expected to feed at least a half a million dollars into the Roanoke region and brings in 1,000 students and staff from 12 states.

Hollins is one of the smaller schools participating. There are dozens more including The University of Alabama and University of Mississippi.

"We sort of see this as our coming-out party. People are suddenly aware that Hollins is an active, vibrant campus that promotes everything, especially the arts. It's pretty wonderful for the world to see what we're doing here," said Ernie Zulia, the Hollins Theatre Department Chairman.

If you want to visit the design competition go by the Tayloe Gym inside Hollins University Athletic Complex from 9 a.m. to noon or 1:00 - 5:30 p.m.

You can be part of the Winter Festival next month. A play called "Ben and Rita" will run February 18-23 on the Mill Mountain Theatre's Waldron Stage. For more information visit the Mill Mountain Theatre website.
