I-Team: Police investigate video of officers using force

Posted: Updated:

A short video clip was sent to NBC 10 and posted on Facebook that purportedly shows three Pawtucket police officers subduing an unidentified man.

It's unclear what led up to the footage or why the officers used the force seen on the video.

One officer is seen striking the man twice with a baton next to a marked Pawtucket cruiser. Another officer kneels down on the man when a third officer comes around into the frame.

The officer who used his baton then kneels down on the man, near his head and neck area, and can be seen pulling out a can of pepper spray and spraying the man in the face, while all three officers hold the suspect down on the ground.

It’s unclear if the man was handcuffed.

The video was taken by a person who wants to remain anonymous.

NBC 10 has learned the footage was shot on Exchange Street near Tolman High School. Police are not releasing the name of the man or the names of the three officers, referring questions to the city solicitor.

Maj. Arthur Martins said the video is under review and is being investigated. Martins also said the officers are still on the job and that no action has been taken against them.
