Danville animal shelter quarantined after distemper cases

Posted: Updated:
Two cases of distemper in dogs that have been adopted have been confirmed by the City of Danville animal shelter.

Now they’re urging pet owners to vaccinate their pets.

Distemper is a viral disease that is most commonly associated with domestic dogs and ferrets.  This virus spreads through bodily fluids and can cause fever, runny nose, loss of appetite, seizures and other health issues.  Puppies are especially susceptible to this disease.

The Danville Area Humane Society is an open-access shelter, meaning they do not turn away animals.  Animals are frequently brought to the shelter with an unknown medical and vaccination history.  In light of these two dogs being diagnosed with distemper, the animal areas have been quarantined and employees are working to disinfect the entire shelter.

According to their recent press release, their dogs have been placed on antibiotics and are being monitored for any sign of sickness.   If the antibiotics are ineffective, those dogs will be euthanized.

Distemper is fairly uncommon, but shelters and veterinarians have seen a revival of the disease in some unvaccinated rural areas.

The Danville animal shelter advises pet owners to call a veterinary clinic immediately if they notice any signs of a respiratory infection, nasal discharge or neurological symptoms in their animals.

Doctors from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine are visiting the shelter next week to test samples from the animals and keep this outbreak under control.

Citizens that want to help the shelter can donate towels, blankets, brooms, and cleaning supplies.
