Biggest Loser Debate Over Weight Loss

Posted: Updated:
There has been a lot of discussion about Rachel's weight loss on NBC's The Biggest Loser TV show.

She went from 260 pounds to 105 pounds.  She is 5'4" and according to a body mass index calculation she would be considered slightly underweight.

Some people have said she looks looked anorexic and unhealthy, while others are congratulating her for dropping 155 pounds.

Jefferson College of Health Sciences Director of Exercise Science, Dr. Ally Bowersock provides some perspective.  She says it would take several other tests to determine whether she is "healthy" or "unhealthy."

She explains, "There haven't been a lot of studies that have been done, but the one that has really looked at the benefit versus the drawback of the show shows that in general it is not beneficial for people to see an unrealistic representation of weight loss that The Biggest Loser shows."

B
owersock adds that we can watch the show for entertainment but that we shouldn't look at contestant results as a bench-mark for what we should achieve.  She says, those results are not necessarily healthy or realistic.
