Centertown Bedford to go through revitalization

BEDFORD - Jim Messier started working at Arthur's Jewelry when he was 15. Now he's the owner and not only has he seen his business grow but also the changes outside of the building too.

In the early 1980's he saw when Centertown Bedford went through a transformation.

"They went through, tore all the streets, all the sidewalks, and put the electric underground and brought us to a historic look," says Messier.

Now about 30 years later there's another revitalization. The town received about $400,000 in grants. We found out the money will be used for several things. This includes adding handicapped ramps, improved cracked sidewalks, and more parking spaces.

Right now town officials are choosing the right engineer for the project and expect to pick one by April. The town manager told us the changes will not only help attract businesses in Centertown but give people a better stay too.

"The idea it's just for people in wheelchairs is not what it's about," says Charles Kolakowski, town manager. "It's for people who are handicapped, who are older, people who are pushing baby carriages and who have knees that are achy and have trouble going down the curb."
