ROANOKE COUNTY, VA -

A local organization is getting $6,500 from the federal government to start a new program, the first in Virginia.

It's called VetCorps. The Prevention Council of Roanoke County is overseeing the project aiming to help active military, veterans and their families with homelessness, unemployment, substance abuse and mental health.

"One of the things we see in any family in the roanoke valley our struggles with substance abuse. whether that's alcohol or prescription drug abuse things of that nature. so what we want to do is go ahead and get in front of things," said Brittany Sandidge with the Prevention Council of Roanoke County.

VetCorps will pair community groups with families who need help and work to find the biggest needs, gaps and find ways to fix them.

They do have to match the federal grant and are looking for donors.
