UPDATE:Suspect arrested in attempted armed robbery at Valley Bank

Posted: Updated:
11:51 Update:

WSLS spoke with an employee of Kroger that was working while the store went on lockdown.

Police tell WSLS that 59-year-old Glenn W. Ruff robbed the Valley Bank just before 3 p.m. After Ruff allegedly robbed the bank.

He was then spotted going into the Kroger that shares a parking lot with the bank.

Employees there didn't even know what happened until they heard about the robbery on a police scanner kept in the store.

Soon after, the Kroger was placed on lockdown ---meaning that customers and employees couldn't leave until police could find the robber who was in the store.

WSLS spoke with a Kroger employee that tells us management had to take all of the employees back to safety, locking themselves in a back conference room for nearly an hour while police searched for the gunman.

“It was a little bit scary. We didn't know what was exactly going on. We didn't know for sure they had gotten the guy. We didn't know if he was going to come running through the door or what. It was a little bit nerve-racking. I guess i didn't realize to begin with how dangerous it was. But after we thought about it a little bit it got a little more dangerous,” the employee said.

Thankfully no one was injured.

Ruff is now in Roanoke County/ Salem jail.

Police say this has no connection to the bank robbery in Roanoke earlier this week.
