A Salem boy celebrates his birthday making a difference for others.
Rocky Palotas just turned 11 years old. He had a party Sunday to celebrate but instead of family and friends bringing gifts, he asked them to bring a donation for the Roanoke Rescue Mission. Rocky also asked his school and members of his church.
He filled one six foot table, then needed another and filled it. Rocky says he got the idea after he saw the movie Little Red Wagon based on the true story of an 8-year-old boy who set out with his wagon to change the world and help homeless children. "They were just amazed that I would do that," Palotas said of his friends. "Lot of my friends donated and most of them donated more than one thing."
The collection table will be set up through Friday at the Salem Art Center, located at 213 4th Street East in Salem. The Rescue Mission lists critical need items as pain relievers, cough drops, Claritin, tissues, and twin sheet sets. Other items needed include batteries, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, diapers, pull-ups, wipes, ear plugs and zip top bags.
Rocky will help deliver the items next week.
