Christiansburg Head Coach Tim Cromer is an intense high school football coach. Any time you look in on Blue Demon's practice, the chance for clenched teeth is high. His C'Burg team is a perennial power in the River Ridge and beyond. The Blue Demons have been regulars in the VHSL playoffs, including a state runnerup finish and a state semifinal appearance in the past five seasons.

When the JV girls basketball team had to cancel a game--Cromer immediately wanted to know why. His daughter Kaylyn is an 8th grader who plays on the team. Turns out the varsity coaches were suspended and eventually resigned, leaving 1st year JV coach Shelley Pierson in charge...and leaving the JV coaching position vacant.

In steps the veteran football coach. Cromer played basketball in high school, coached it some--when Kaylyn was younger--but not recently. The adjustments were obviously dramatic--so much so that Cromer was getting ribbed by the refs in his first game for leaving the coaching box and heading to half court. Allowed in football, sure, 25 to 25 yd line, but not on the hardwoods. His daughter says she is glad he's coaching and that the team has accepted him stepping in. Cromer admits that coaching girls is different than coaching boys--but coaching is coaching and this is helping him become a better coach. He says it is teaching him patience. In the meantime, the JV girls all say he's been nice--and Cromer treats them much better than their older male football counterparts.

Cromer's deed has taken him away from home--again. Something football coaches are used to. But it has brought him in direct coaching contact with his daughter. And for the rest of the team--they get to have a season.
