Senate Democrats hope to vote as early as today on legislation to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a federal default. The bill would permit the Treasury Department to borrow normally for another 13 months.

The Senate will also hold a hearing on extreme weather-- including tornadoes, severe droughts, wildfires, flash floods and hurricanes--- and the cost of not being prepared. The Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security and the Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Protection are just two of the witnesses scheduled to testify.

The City of Roanoke will make a decision today on whether a local family can keep its Emu. The Powell family filed an application for a special permit that would allow it to keep an Emu at its Raleigh Court home.
