Local flights cancelled due to storm

Posted: Updated:

Flights departing from the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport for Atlanta and Charlotte have been canceled for today.

The cancellations are due to many airlines trying to thin out the number people at the large southern hubs when the winter storm hits.

During the last big storm, many people were stranded at the Atlanta airport and airlines are trying to avoid that this time around.

Thousands of flights have been canceled nationwide so far this week.

Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport's Communications Coordinator, Amanda DeHaven, says this is the earliest she has seen airlines canceling flights to prepare for a storm.

She says while most flights to northern cities are still on schedule that could change as the day goes on.

"Once things start happening somewhere like Charlotte and Atlanta, things are going to domino effect and it's going to start impacting other airports," says DeHaven.

Most airlines are allowing those impacted to reschedule their flights at no additional cost.
