Driver charged with assault after hitting Raleigh Police cruiser

A pickup truck collided with a Raleigh Police cruiser Monday morning as officers were attempting to stop the drive of the truck in connection with a domestic assault.

Police say officers responded to the 900 block of Williams Road Monday around 10 a.m. in reference to a domestic assault involving a male suspect and a female victim.

Officers were informed the suspect had driven away from the scene in a pickup truck, and responding officers say they saw a vehicle matching the truck's description as they neared the location of the assault.

The officers attempted to stop the truck, but the driver refused to stop. After traveling a short distance, police say the driver crossed the center line and struck a Raleigh Police Department patrol car that was stopped in the opposite lane at the intersection of Poole and St. George roads.

The driver of the police vehicle involved in the crash, Officer L.N. Yesh, 24, was transported to WakeMed for treatment of her injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck, 53-year-old Max Felton Mitchell, was taken into custody and transported to WakeMed by Raleigh Police.

Mitchell is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with his collision. He is also charged with assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting serious injury in connection with an ankle injury sustained by another officer, and assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting injury for a hand injury sustained by a third officer.

The two officers were injured while trying to detain Mitchell following the accident.

He was also  charged with DWI, careless and reckless driving, and driving while license revoked.

In the matter of the domestic assault, Mitchell is charged with assault on a female, communicating threats and violation of a domestic violence protective order.
