The shopping center on the corner of Franklin and Wonju where Ukrops used to be may finally be getting a new tenant.
But first, city council has to approve changes to the city's performance agreement with the current property owner for the space to be filled.
The majority of this building has been empty since Ukrops moved out in 2009. "Ivy View, LLC" now owns the property and wants to change the performance agreement with the city so it can sell the space to a company for a non-retail use.
According to the agreement, 50 percent of the building was supposed to be filled with retailers by July. But it still sits empty.
Ivy View says it's had zero luck attracting stores. That's why it wants to change the agreement with the city, allowing for a non-retail company to move in.
Carilion Clinic is interested in opening a clinic in the space which would provide services to people that don't need to be admitted to the hospital, similar to the clinic located at 3 Riverside Drive.
If City Council approves the change, the facility would have to be up and running by the end of 2015.
This is obviously not the outcome the city had hoped for in terms of the meals and sales taxes that could have been generated by the space. The city feels changing this agreement could still help draw retailers to the empty lot next door.
