Round Hill Elementary to expand cafeteria and add classrooms

Posted: Updated:

Next year, students at Round Hill Elementary school in Roanoke will have a bigger lunchroom and more classrooms. This week, the Roanoke city council presented a check to the city school system for more than $1.7 million an dollars. The funds comes from the sale of Huff Lane Elementary School.

Previously city leaders agreed that the proceeds from the sale would go toward capitol improvement projects. The school system plans to use the money for renovations at Round Hill which includes a new cafeteria and several new classrooms.

"The cafeteria will be about 3 times the size it is now and the addition of 6 new classrooms will give us the room to do some extra things in class" said Cory Hawks, Round Hill principal.

The improvements are part of a multi-year plan. Last summer, Round Hill added a new gym. Down the line, school leaders hope to build about 20 classrooms to replace some of the modular units.
