Celtics-Raiders Rivalry an Independent School Gem

Posted: Updated:

The north Carolina-duke feud is fueled by years of quality squads, and less than ten miles separating the two schools. In Roanoke, two pillars of the Independent school community---North Cross-and Roanoke Catholic are less than six miles apart.   And with proximity--comes rivalry. The players say seeing each other around town and talking about it has made the intensity grow over the years.

The two schools ceased playing football after the 09 season, when Roanoke Catholic's numbers were simply too small to make the game competitive.  Those circumstances have occurred to both schools through the years...but one--remains constant.  The hardwood--collisions---that are now the showcase. Roanoke Catholic Coach Leon Caldwell explained that he knew right away when he took the job that winning me would be a little sweeter than the rest.

The history of the Raiders and Celtics dates back to the 1970's....and it is filled with lasting memories..and mutual respect. And while the future may include some logistical challenges, we've been assured that the two pillars will continue to measure themselves against each other..for years to come.
