Roanoke City Public Schools to Create New Strategic Plan This Year

Posted: Updated:

Roanoke City Public Schools is in the early phases of developing a new strategic plan.

The school system does this every five years.

Planning will kick into high gear this summer and the plan is expected to be finished before the end of the year.

One thing the district plans to do during the planning process is evaluate what progress was made on the last plan and what can still be improved.

One of the big goals of the last plan was to get graduation rates up and that's something the district achieved.

The graduation rate in 2010 was 67.7%.

The graduation rate in 2013 was up to 80.35%.

Superintendent Rita Bishop says she is happy to see the rate increase, but it's something she wants to see increase further.

Another big focus of the 2009-2014 plan was to create more partnerships with local groups like the City and Virginia Western Community College.

That's something Bishop says has changed immensely in the last five years.

To be a successful district, Bishop says, "You must have those partnerships and so everyday we work on those partnerships. We are constantly talking about who the new partners are."

One goal that was not met from the last plan was to be fully accredited all five years. Bishop anticipates the district will continue that as a focus for the next five years.

There are some new issues that Bishop hopes to see tackled in the new plan.

One is putting technology in the hands of students.

A concern for the district right now is preparing students to take standardized tests online.

Since some students have limited access to technology, Bishop hopes the school district can provide more opportunities for them to use it in the future.

She would also like to see the summer enrichment program be part of the next plan.
