New Surgical Technologist Program Fills Need and Provides Opportunities for Students

Posted: Updated:
Learning to properly load a needle for surgery is one of many skills Surgical Technology students at Jefferson College of Health Sciences are learning through a new course being offered this semester.

John Ratliff moved to Roanoke to teach the new class.

He says, "More than likely the students will be hired before they even graduate."

Carilion Clinic has a need for surgical technologists.

Ashley Orange recently graduated from Liberty High School in Bedford.  She knew she wanted a career in the medical field.

Derick Stackpole went to school at Virginia Tech and James Madison University before deciding to pursue a whole new career in health care.

The course lasts four semesters or about a year and a half.  After the first semester, students will be in an actual operating room putting the skills they learn in class to use in real life situations.

Ratliff explains, "They probably have close to seven hundred hours of clinical internship.  They will scrub over one hundred and twenty cases before they graduate."
