Bedford County Fire Department honors senior volunteer with award nomination

Posted: Updated:
The Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue is honoring a volunteer by nominating him for Home Instead's Solute to Senior Service Award.

We were there when the department told Russell Stevens he was nominated.

Next year is his 40th anniversary as a volunteer fire fighter.

Chief Jack Jones says Russell has kept up with technology and is instrumental in training new volunteers.

In fact, he's mentored or taught every chief in Bedford County.

“Engaged volunteers is key.  Having volunteers with wisdom and knowledge is just phenomenal and our business is inherently dangerous, so when we have someone who has 30 years of service and experience that really pays huge dividend,” explained Chief Jones.

Russell says he has no plans to quit any time soon.  He just enjoys training the new guys.

If you would like to vote for Russell just log on to http://www.homeinstead.com/376/Pages/HomeInsteadSeniorCare.aspx
