Plans for Glenvar High renovation unveiled

Posted: Updated:
The exterior walls are cracked and the building is plagued with corrosion.

Now fifty years old, county leaders are planning big changes, and much needed upgrades for the home of the highlanders.

Dr. Martin Misicko says the renovation of Glenvar High School is a must.

"Glenvar High School has not been renovated since construction and right now we are trying to meet the needs of the students with a better learning facility,” Misicko said.

Identifying some of the major issues, Spectrum Design Architect Firm says some of the major building deficiencies are due to these outdated designs like limited parking and traffic problems. There are even issues with ponding on the roof.

Glenvar high school was built in 1964 so obviously the building has some wear and tear issues over time but the biggest concern right now is that parts of building aren’t currently up to state recommendations some parts aren't even ADA accessible meaning that handicap students could have problems accessing certain parts of the building.

Renovation plans layout some major changes to fix those problems like the expansion of classroom sizes to meet state recommendations and building a bigger cafeteria with a kitchen.

A new gym and media center will be added along with improved special education classrooms.

Jason Peters, member of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors says that Glenvar High School has been overlooked too long.

"It’s in disrepair and its time that they have their turn in getting the renovation and bringing things up to speed for the citizens in Glenvar,” Peters said.
